Paper IA — first year
10 chapters · Algebra of functions and matrices, vectors and trigonometry
- FunctionsFunctions sets the language for the rest of the course: what a function is, which inputs it accepts, what it can output, and when it can be reversed or combined with another function.
- Mathematical InductionMathematical induction proves that a statement holds for every natural number by checking a first case and showing each case implies the next.
- MatricesMatrices covers matrix algebra, determinants, adjoint and inverse, rank, and solving systems of linear equations.
- Addition of VectorsAddition of Vectors introduces vectors as quantities with direction, position vectors, the section formula and the vector equations of lines and planes.
- Product of VectorsProduct of Vectors covers the scalar (dot) and vector (cross) products and their extensions, and uses them to find angles, projections, areas and volumes.
- Trigonometric Ratios up to TransformationsThis chapter builds the trigonometric toolkit: ratios of compound, multiple and sub-multiple angles, and the transformations between sums and products.
- Trigonometric EquationsTrigonometric Equations is about finding every angle that satisfies an equation — the general solution — and counting solutions within an interval.
- Inverse Trigonometric FunctionsInverse Trigonometric Functions defines sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹, tan⁻¹ and the rest on restricted domains, and uses their properties to simplify expressions and solve equations.
- Hyperbolic FunctionsHyperbolic Functions defines sinh, cosh and tanh using exponentials, along with their identities and their inverses written as logarithms.
- Properties of TrianglesProperties of Triangles connects the sides and angles of a triangle with its area, circumradius, inradius and exradii, and applies them to heights and distances.
Paper IB — first year
10 chapters · Coordinate geometry in two and three dimensions, and differential calculus
- LocusLocus is the set of all points that satisfy a condition.
- Transformation of AxesTransformation of Axes shows how equations change when the origin is shifted or the axes are rotated, including how to remove the xy-term from a second-degree equation.
- The Straight LineThe Straight Line covers every form of a line’s equation, the angle between lines, distances, concurrency and families of lines.
- Pair of Straight linesPair of Straight Lines studies second-degree equations that represent two lines, the angle between them, their bisectors and the technique of homogenisation.
- Three Dimensional CoordinatesThree Dimensional Coordinates extends distance and section formulas to space.
- Direction Cosines and Direction RatiosDirection cosines and direction ratios describe the direction of a line in space and give the angle between two lines.
- PlaneThe Plane chapter covers the equation of a plane in its standard forms, the angle between planes and the distance of a point from a plane.
- Limits and ContinuityLimits and Continuity introduces the limit of a function and the conditions for a function to be continuous — the entry point to calculus.
- DifferentiationDifferentiation builds the rules for finding derivatives: standard derivatives, product, quotient and chain rules, and implicit, parametric and logarithmic differentiation.
- Applications of DerivativesApplications of Derivatives uses derivatives to find errors and approximations, tangents and normals, rates of change, monotonicity, maxima and minima, and the mean value theorems.
Paper IIA — second year
9 chapters · Complex numbers, equations, counting, binomial theorem, statistics and probability
- Complex NumbersComplex Numbers covers the algebra of numbers of the form a + ib, their modulus and argument, and their geometry in the Argand plane.
- De Moivre's TheoremDe Moivre's theorem raises a complex number in polar form to a power, and gives every nth root of a complex number, including the roots of unity.
- Quadratic ExpressionsQuadratic Expressions studies the roots of quadratic equations, their nature, the relations with coefficients, and the sign and extreme values of a quadratic expression.
- Theory of EquationsTheory of Equations extends quadratics to higher-degree polynomials: relations between roots and coefficients, transformed equations and reciprocal equations.
- Permutations and CombinationsPermutations and Combinations is the mathematics of counting — arrangements where order matters and selections where it does not.
- Binomial TheoremBinomial Theorem expands (a + b)ⁿ for positive integers and (1 + x)ⁿ for rational n.
- Measures of DispersionMeasures of Dispersion describes how spread out data is, through range, mean deviation, variance, standard deviation and the coefficient of variation.
- ProbabilityProbability covers classical and axiomatic probability, the addition and multiplication theorems, conditional probability, independent events and Bayes’ theorem.
- Random Variables and Probability DistributionsThis chapter treats outcomes as random variables, computes their mean and variance, and introduces the binomial and Poisson distributions.
Paper IIB — second year
8 chapters · Circles and conic sections, and integral calculus
- CircleCircle covers the equation of a circle and the lines related to it: tangents, normals, chords of contact, the polar of a point and the length of a tangent.
- System of circlesSystem of Circles studies two or more circles together: the angle between them, orthogonal circles, radical axis and centre, and common tangents.
- ParabolaParabola covers the standard parabola, its focus, directrix and latus rectum, and its tangents and normals, using the parametric form.
- EllipseEllipse covers the standard ellipse, its eccentricity, foci and directrices, the latus rectum, and tangent conditions.
- HyperbolaHyperbola mirrors the ellipse with key sign changes, and adds asymptotes and the rectangular hyperbola.
- IntegrationIntegration covers indefinite integrals: standard forms, substitution, integration by parts and partial fractions.
- Definite IntegralsDefinite Integrals evaluates integrals between limits, uses their properties to shortcut hard integrals, and applies them to areas.
- Differential equationsDifferential Equations covers the order and degree of an equation, forming equations from families of curves, and solving separable, homogeneous and linear equations.
How to prepare EAPCET Mathematics
Mathematics carries 80 of the 160 questions — half the Engineering paper — so it moves your rank more than any other subject. A chapter improved in Maths is worth roughly twice the same improvement in Physics or Chemistry.
Coordinate geometry (12 of the 37 chapters, across Papers IB and IIB) and calculus (6 chapters) make up about half of the syllabus by chapter count. They reward fluency: most questions are a standard result applied once or twice.
Speed matters as much as accuracy. With about 67 seconds per question across the paper, Maths questions that need long working are the ones to mark for review and return to.
Work through the first-year papers (IA, IB) early, because second-year chapters such as Circle and Integration build directly on them.
Test yourself against real exam conditions with the previous year question papers, and see how the full paper is split on the EAPCET exam pattern page.
